25 Books Every Christian Should Read

In 25 Books Every Christian Should Read, Richard Foster, Dallas Willard, Phyllis Tickle, Chris Webb, and a diverse editorial board of authors and speakers have identified the most helpful and historic books for Christian discipleship and created a resource that helps us make the most of them.  Including a sizable excerpt from each book, 25 Books is designed to help individual readers and small groups work through the most important books for formation in Christlikeness.  From Augustine’s Confessions to Thomas Kelly’s A Testament of Devotion, this list and this resource will lead you on a journey of discipleship that few in the history of the Church have experienced.

I've found the 25 Books project to be quite interesting.  I'm not surprised that this comes from Renovare, an organization that exists to help others become more and more like Jesus.  When I first heard of this project, there were a few of my personal favorites that I had hoped would make it on the list; sure enough, they did.  One by one, Renovare has been revealing which books have been chosen.  Here's the latest list.

Some of my favorites that have been chosen include:  The Rule of St. Benedict, Mere Christianity, and the Return of the Prodigal Son.  I also noticed that Thomas Merton's Seven Storey Mountain made the cut although it's yet to be listed on the Renovare site.  I was hoping Merton would make this list so it made me happy to see that he did!

Which of these books happen to be your favorites?  Any that you would add?

I'm a big fan of Calvin's Institutes. You don't gotta be a Calvinist to glean lot's of wisdom from this classic work. His stuff on the sacraments is awesome. Also his stuff on our mystical union with Christ is tops.

I'm glad you shared that, Peter. I've never read Calvin's Institutes but have wanted to. I'm adding it to my list.

Two that have meant a lot to me include LIFE TOGETHER by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and COMMUNITY & GROWTH by Jean Vanier.
